OLLI at Duke Classes Introduced to Carolina Arbors for Fall 2017
By Carol Pinkasavage
OLLI is expanding its reach by offering seven courses at a facility new to the program. Carolina Arbors, situated in the rapidly growing Brier Creek area, is a 55+ community with over 1,500 retired and working professional residents. Piedmont Hall, the community’s 37,000 square foot amenity center, will be used.
On Monday, July 24, a presentation was made to approximately 100 CA residents about OLLI and how it works. Garry Crites, Ginny Knight, Raymond Conroy, and Margaret McKeon explained OLLI history and organization, volunteer opportunities, how to use the OLLI catalogue, membership benefits, and registration. Jackie Scott, OLLI Communications Director and CA resident, introduced the presentation, which was warmly received by the group. Residents were then invited to have individual conversations with OLLI representatives about the program, classes, and opportunities to teach a future course.
Bringing OLLI to CA was spearheaded by Lise Jenkins, CA resident and former OLLI board member, who approached CA management and then Garry Crites. She brought Cathedrals of Britian, a class she previously taught, to CA as a ‘pilot’. Over 30 people enrolled and the reaction was very positive to the class and this new location. Jenkins said, "People who live in Carolina Arbors have lead such interesting lives and it's such great fun to learn from each other. I'm thrilled to see the number of courses offered at Piedmont Hall grow so quickly and hope that others will decide to offer an OLLI course."
The seven courses, six of which are being taught by Carolina Arbor residents, will include:
Garry Crites expressed enthusiasm for this expansion of OLLI. With Duke classroom space at a premium, and the current space options maxed out, the welcome extended by Carolina Arbors is a benefit to the program. Based on the reactions of the CA audience to the presentation, the membership is also likely to expand.
