News from the Community Engagement Committee
Are you new to Durham and curious about your new community? Are you new to retirement and seeking avenues for meaningful engagement and connection to others? Are you a long time Durham resident seeking new ways to help your community? Then consider the many benefits of community engagement: participation in the life of Durham by working with others to create a healthier and more equitable community for all residents.
The new Community Engagement Committee led by Virginia Lee (Chair), Beth Anderson, and Joe Howe has an ambitious agenda for the coming year:
• Forge close working relationships with 3-5 community partners (e.g., non-profits, government agencies) that are able to provide well-managed volunteer opportunities for our members.
Do you currently volunteer for an organization in Durham that you feel would make a good community partner? PLEASE LET US KNOW.
• Design a 10-week course on community engagement targeting members new to the area and/or retirement, to be offered annually for the first time in Fall 2020. The course will address the psychological and spiritual dimensions of community engagement, the dynamics of experiential learning, provide an overview of the Durham community and its active non-profit
sector, describe forms of community engagement, and provide opportunities for participant reflection on their interests, reasons for volunteering and parameters of engagement.
Are you interested in helping design a course that will benefit new OLLI members and the wider community? WE ARE LOOKING FOR 3-4 VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH PLANNING.
• Develop a course on Pauli Murray, the pioneering Durham-born female Black lawyer, civil rights leader, activist, educator, writer, and Episcopalian priest in collaboration with local experts. Are you knowledgeable about Pauli Murray and her impressive legacy and/or know local Murray experts? PLEASE CONTACT US.
As these projects develop there will be more community engagement opportunities for OLLI members, so please stay tuned. Virginia Lee (Chair), vlee31@yahoo.com; Beth Anderson, bethellenwatermellon@gmail.com; Joe Howe, jjhoweny@hotmail.com.

Member Relations Committee Call for Volunteers
Activities and outings are some of the most important ways we continue learning and build connection among OLLI members. The Membership Committee is looking for pairs of volunteers who are willing to plan one or two events a year.
Want to organize a field trip to Cedar Creek Gallery or plan a behind the scenes tour of DPAC or the Ruby? Invite a friend to join you in planning an event/event. We welcome your ideas!
We'll have a fun kick off gathering in September and let you know how we will support your efforts. We promise no long committee meetings. If you are new to OLLI and eager to get to know Durham and your fellow OLLI members, the Membership Committee is the place to be! Email Chris Abrons your ideas and suggestions at Cmabrons@gmail.com

Volunteer Opportunity with Durham Center for Senior Living EATS Program
Few people realize that an estimated 7,300 senior citizens in Durham are food insecure, meaning they have limited or uncertain access to adequate food. The Durham Center for Senior Life (DCSL) in partnership with Durham County Social Services has begun a new program to help address this program. It is called DCSL EATS. The program relies on volunteers to help with the mission of ensuring seniors improve their access to healthy, nutritious food. Come in as a volunteer, and leave a DCSL agent and lifetime member of the DCSL Family.
Durham Center for Senior Life will process all inquiries, applications and provide training. Hours and scheduling are flexible, and you only do what you can and want to do. Help is needed in these areas:
• Organize the food pantry at DCSL
• Transport seniors to food store or food resources in Durham County
• Transport Commodity Supplemental Food Program Boxes or food pantry bags to seniors home.
For complete information, contact: Alicia Allen Gant, Social Services Coordinator, at aallen@dcslnc.org or 919-688-8247 x.103.

Community Engagement SIG Needs Volunteers for Two Projects
The Community Engagement SIG needs volunteers for the following two projects:
Meals on Wheels: Several participants in the Fall 2018 Food Insecurity in Durham: A Community Engagement Course laid the foundation for an Organization Adopt-a-Route Program to supplement the individual volunteer model that Meals on Wheels uses primarily. Meals on Wheels does not have the capacity to implement this project without our help. We need 2-3 additional volunteers to work with a Fall 2018 course participant to get the program up and running. Please contact Virginia Lee, vlee31@yahoo.com for more information and to express interest.
Farmer Foodshare: Several other participants in the Fall 2018 course began an evaluation of Farmer Foodshare’s Donation Station Program. The Program collects donations at area farmers’ markets, uses the proceeds to purchase produce from farmers, and distributes the produce to families and organizations in need. We need 2-3 additional volunteers to continue work with 2 Fall 2018 course participants on this project. Please contact Beth Anderson, bethellenwatermellon@gmail.com for more information and to express interest.
We are also working on developing two projects in the education area, one with a local non-profit, the other with an elementary school. These projects are in the planning stages, but it’s not too early to express interest in participating. The next meeting of the Community Engagement SIG is on Friday, March 15, 2:30-4:00 PM, SW Durham Public Library, Shannon Road, Durham. We will be meeting regularly on the third Friday of each month. Please join us!
The Community Engagement SIG facilitates small groups (3-5 people) of OLLI members working with community partners in Durham on projects identified by the partner to enhance their effectiveness, capacity and outcomes. For further information, contact Virginia Lee, Coordinator, vlee31@yahoo.com.

Are you comfortable with Computers?
We are soliciting members who would be willing to volunteer from time to time to help committees on technical topics. You don't have to be a guru, just willing to investigate something, or advise us. The key requirement is an interest in helping and learning, backed up by some aptitude for computer-related stuff. Examples include a spreadsheet project with the Curriculum Committee, a web site project with the Communications Committee, an analysis project on the use of Spotlight, photographers for events, etc. We will create a panel of volunteers and reach out when there is a specific project. At that time you would see if you can fit it in ... no commitment now. Just fill in the form on this page and we will get back to you. And a big thanks for considering this opportunity.
